Here is an update on what our Chadron GNT group is working on for 2013 - call if questions or comments, thanks!  Lucinda 308-430-4186 Spring and Fall, 2013 Chadron Community Hospital Memorial Garden Volunteers, hospital staff, and Girl Scout Gold Award candidates will install poured permeable pavement and plant trees and shrubs with drip irrigation and mulch.  Scouts have fund-raised $4800 toward this project; the GNT group intends to support the Scouts and their project advisor to accomplish their goal of making the hospital landscape water-wise. Spring and Fall, 2013  Chadron GNT's second year of sponsoring the tree-planting voucher program will be up and running by late April.  To participate, trees must be purchased from Chadron businesses, selected from an approved tree list, planted according to approved guidelines, and inspected by a member of the Chadron Tree Board. April 27, 2013  CSC Campus Arboretum Volunteers and CSC student service groups to plant teaching collection of  shrubs (600 plts) and bunch grasses (120 plts) native to the region, lay drip irrigation, and hook irrigation to 3500-gallon above-ground water tank that is filled by Burkhiser's roof rain and snow run-off.  Entire 11,000 sq ft bed to be mulched with shredded and chipped pine.  (How far we get that day will depend on size of group and weather conditions.)  Project to be finished by CSC staff. April 30, 2013  Arbor Day event planting canopy trees with 5th grade students in Finnegan Park and surrounding area.  Planting leaders from the Chadron Tree Board, Chadron City Parks staff and other city departments, Chadron State College staff, members of the Chadron City Parks Foundation, Nebraska Forest Service, and US Forest Service. May 8, 2013  Kenwood School students and teachers grades 3 and 4 to plant Phase 3 of 4 of waterwise shade, windbreak, and snow catchers around North playing field at Kenwood.  We plan to add some evergreen trees to the canopy trees we planted in 2012, add drip irrigation, and mulch the entire planting bed (800 linear ft - approx 4800 sq ft.) Planting leaders from the Chadron Tree Board, Chadron City Parks staff and other city departments, Chadron State College staff, members of the Chadron City Parks Foundation, Nebraska Forest Service, and US Forest Service. May 18, 2013 Dawes County Courthouse staff and county commissioners, Delta Group Volunteers, and others from the Chadron Tree Board, Chadron City Parks staff, Chadron State College staff, Nebraska Forest Service, and US Forest Service to prepare planting beds, plant trees, install drip irrigation and apply organic mulch to canopy trees on courthouse square.  This may be accomplished in two phases, one May 18 and one in the autumn.
