Fire Prevention MonthMrs. Dickey's Class
Making a plan for fire safety at home is very important! Fourth graders were instructed to go home and talk to their families about what they need to do in the case of a fire. I think the students' favorite part was trying on the fire gear. We all looked and walked a little silly! Thanks to the Chadron Fire Department for volunteering your time to visit and for all you have done for our community!

As part of the Greener Nebraska Towns celebration, students at CIS took part in a tree planting ceremony at their school with Nebraska's First Lady, Sally Ganem. The First Lady talked to the students about the importance of trees to our community. Seven students assisted her in planting a burr oak tree, which will be a nice addition to the trees previously planted by CIS students.
Mrs. Piercy's ClassroomStudents at CIS enjoyed a visit from author David Nieves. He shared his knowledge of reptiles with the students and talked about why it is important to share what we know with others. He talked about the Six Traits of Writing and how to take a broad idea and narrow it down to a topic that is manageable. He told students that when they add their own voice to their writing, they make it fun for others to read. Students enjoyed listening to his stories and seeing his interesting reptiles.
